Are breath and smell connected

Our sense of smell and our breathing are more closely connected than we might imagine.

A study published in Nature Communications in October 2024 explored this relationship by monitoring the breathing patterns of 52 people over 24 hours: 31 with a normal sense of smell and 21 born without one, a condition known as congenital anosmia.

The researchers found that participants with a functioning sense of smell produced approximately 240 additional inhalation peaks per waking hour. These small variations in nasal airflow may reflect unconscious exploratory sniffing — the way our noses continually sample the surrounding environment.

Other differences in breathing patterns persisted even during sleep. By analysing respiratory airflow alone, the researchers could distinguish between the two groups with 83% accuracy within the study.

Breathing as a Sensory Experience

For those of us who work with aromatic plants and perfumes, the relationship between breathing and smelling is fundamental. In my courses, I often describe breathing as a precursor to the experience of scent: we cannot fully separate one from the other.

What makes this research particularly interesting is the suggestion that olfaction may influence not only our conscious perception of fragrance but also the subtle rhythms of breathing itself.

The study does not establish that pleasant scents improve breathing or well-being. It does, however, offer a fascinating perspective on the relationship between our sensory abilities and the body.

And perhaps it invites a more personal reflection.

When we encounter a fragrance we love, we may feel drawn to pause, inhale and pay attention. A leaf, a flower or a freshly cut fruit can become an invitation to reconnect with the present moment.

To smell is also to make room for an encounter with the world.

In a life increasingly mediated by screens and technological devices, taking a moment to explore a natural scent can be a simple way of returning to direct sensory experience.

An oasis in the chaos, finding serenity with aromatherapy and Bach flower remedies

Chaos. Sometimes it feels like we live in the midst of it, overwhelmed by events, commitments, situations that escape our control. Sometimes we feel “strange”, out of phase, as if a veil of melancholy and confusion has settled within us.

In these moments, the only solution is to create an oasis of peace within ourselves, a refuge where we can rediscover balance and serenity. To do this, nature offers us precious tools, such as Bach flower remedies and essential oils.

Walnut, the Bach remedy “for great changes”, helps us to adapt to new situations, to protect ourselves from external influences and to follow our path with confidence and determination. It is a valuable ally in times of transition and uncertainty, when we feel vulnerable and disoriented.

Lavender and chamomile will be our allies, being two essential oils particularly suitable for creating an atmosphere of peace and serenity in our environment. Lavender, with its sweet and floral scent, promotes relaxation and drives away stress. Chamomile, with its small flower, releases an intense aroma that can help us find our center, with calm and fullness (if you want to explore more about aromatic plants, you can read the ezine Materia Viva).

How can we create our “oasis in the chaos“?

You might consider taking Walnut regularly and diffusing lavender and/or chamomile in the environment: use a room diffuser to spread the calming and rebalancing scent of these essential oils.

You could also create a wellness ritual: treat yourself to a warm bath with a few drops of lavender essential oil, or create a meditative atmosphere by diffusing chamomile essential oil in a quiet and welcoming environment.

Always remember to listen to your inner voice, allowing yourself moments of silence and introspection to listen to your needs and emotions. Your inner wisdom knows more than you think.
