Aromatherapy and Relaxation

Sometimes we simply need to stop.

A few minutes of quiet, a moment to recharge, a little space away from everything demanding our attention. Even when we have many things to do, there comes a point when we realise that rest is necessary.

Our sense of smell can offer a beautiful way to experience that pause. A familiar or particularly pleasing fragrance can help us create a welcoming atmosphere, whether we are alone or spending time with people we love.

Here are four essential oils I particularly enjoy for these moments.

Mandarin — A Gentle Smile

Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)

Mandarin has a sweet, fresh and cheerful fragrance. When we find it difficult to slow down, its familiar citrus warmth can feel like a gentle invitation to let go.

Green mandarin, distilled or expressed from less mature fruit depending on the preparation, has a fresher, more delicate aromatic character. Red mandarin offers a rounder, sweeter and fruitier impression.

Both bring a little brightness into a quiet moment.

Bergamot — Finding Balance

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

Bergamot is one of the great treasures of classical perfumery and a characteristic note in traditional Eau de Cologne.

Its fragrance is elegant, green and luminous, with a refined freshness that feels both uplifting and composed.

I particularly appreciate bergamot when emotions seem to move between highs and lows. Its scent suggests a sense of proportion: neither excessive stimulation nor withdrawal, but a more balanced way of inhabiting the present.

Atlas Cedarwood — Returning to Ourselves

Atlas cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)

For those who enjoy deeper fragrances, Atlas cedarwood offers a warm, woody and quietly enveloping presence.

Its aroma has something noble and timeless, as though it carries a story within the wood.

When commitments and events pull our attention in too many directions, cedarwood can become a personal reminder to return to the here and now.

To pause. To feel our own presence. To remember who we are beneath the noise of the day.

Lavender — A Wider Perspective

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Fine lavender essential oil can reveal extraordinary aromatic delicacy: floral, herbal, slightly sweet and beautifully airy.

For me, its fragrance suggests the possibility of releasing tension and looking at things from a wider perspective.

Sometimes a little distance is all we need to recognise resources and possibilities that were already there.

Lavender reminds us that relaxation does not necessarily mean doing nothing. It can also mean creating enough inner space to see more clearly.

Creating Your Own Aromatic Pause

You do not need an elaborate ritual. Choose one fragrance you genuinely enjoy, use it sparingly in a well-ventilated space, and give yourself a few moments to experience it without distraction. Avoid continuous diffusion, and consider the needs of children, pets and anyone sensitive to fragrances.

The purpose is not to force relaxation, but to create conditions in which rest feels welcome.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer ourselves is permission to pause.
