Eau Sauvage: Alain Delon, Edmond Roudnitska and the Art of Timeless Style

When I think of Alain Delon, one of the first images that comes to mind is his portrait in the advertising campaigns for Dior’s Eau Sauvage.

Created in 1966 by the celebrated perfumer Edmond Roudnitska, who also composed Diorissimo, Eau Sauvage became a landmark in modern perfumery.

Its distinctive bergamot opening, balanced with floral, aromatic and woody notes, creates a composition that feels both fresh and sophisticated. There is something remarkably effortless about its elegance: a quiet yet vibrant presence.

Alain Delon’s association with Eau Sauvage brought together two enduring icons of French style. His image, at once charismatic and understated, became part of the fragrance’s visual identity.

Beyond its history and advertising, Eau Sauvage suggests something that transcends gender and fashion: the possibility of expressing a personal style without imitation.

Perhaps this is what makes certain fragrances timeless. They do not simply follow an era; they continue to invite us to discover what feels authentically our own.

Inside the Perfumer’s Workshop — The History and Culture of Fragrance in Rome

The presentation of Nella bottega del profumiere (Inside the Perfumer’s Workshop), a book by Professor Giuseppe Squillace, offered an opportunity to explore the history of ancient perfumery through documentary sources, literary accounts and reconstructions of traditional fragrance-making practices.

From frankincense and myrrh to spikenard, rose, myrtle and iris, aromatic materials reveal a history spanning thousands of years, shaped by knowledge, trade, ritual practices and the pursuit of beauty.

The event brought together historical research and sensory experience, combining the presentation of the book with guided olfactory exploration of the botanical materials described in ancient sources.

It was an opportunity to experience how the history of fragrance can be shared not only through words, but also through direct encounters with aromatic materials.

Today, I continue to bring this approach to my private botanical perfumery workshops and sensory events.
