Materia Viva, the Aromatic Ezine – Giant Sequoia, the First Issue

Materia Viva is a work in progress dedicated to aromatic raw materials: resins, plants, woods, essences, balsams, flowers, seeds, roots.

It arises where scent, word, image, and research meet. Of each material, what matters is not only its effect, but everything that accompanies it: where it comes from, which landscape generates it, which hands have gathered it, how it has become a symbol.

It is at once a cultural notebook and a sensory experience. Each material is traced back to its origin, through lands and customs, ancient trade routes, archives, faces, and sudden intuitions. Starting from a resin, a wood, a flower, the thread is followed: clues are gathered, the scent is listened to, an image is pursued, until a form surfaces.

Part of this work lives in texts and digital publications; another part becomes original artwork, printed in fine art.

The first issue is dedicated to Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum). Here is an excerpt:

There is a particular sense of wonder in opening a bottle of Giant Sequoia essential oil. The scent is resinous, woody, penetrating — from a tree that can rise beyond a hundred metres and live for three thousand years, an essence is drawn that concentrates this vastness, as if time itself became portable. The time of the Sequoia is not the time of the diary. It is the time in which bark thickens layer upon layer, in which roots intertwine with other roots, in which resistance accumulates without haste.

Materia Viva, la Ezine aromatica – Sequoia gigante, il primo numero

Materia Viva è un lavoro in cammino, dedicato alle materie aromatiche: resine, piante, legni, essenze, balsami, fiori, semi, radici.

Nasce dove si incontrano profumo, parola, immagine e ricerca. Di ogni materia non interessa solo l’effetto, ma tutto ciò che la accompagna: da dove viene, quale paesaggio la genera, quali mani l’hanno raccolta, come è diventata simbolo.

È insieme un quaderno culturale e un’esperienza dei sensi. Ogni materia viene seguita a ritroso fino alla sua origine, attraverso terre e usanze, antiche rotte commerciali, archivi, volti e improvvise intuizioni. Si parte da una resina, un legno, un fiore, e si segue il filo: si raccolgono indizi, si ascolta l’aroma, si insegue un’immagine, finché una forma affiora.

Una parte di questo lavoro vive in testi e pubblicazioni digitali; un’altra diventa grafica d’autore, stampata in fine art.

Il primo numero è dedicato alla Sequoia gigante (Sequoiadendron giganteum), e ne riportiamo qui un estratto:

Si prova un certo stupore nell’aprire una boccetta di olio essenziale di Sequoia gigante. Il profumo è resinoso, legnoso, penetrante — da un albero che può superare i cento metri d’altezza e vivere tremila anni, si ricava una essenza che concentra questa vastità, come se il tempo diventasse portatile. Il tempo della Sequoia non è il tempo dell’agenda. È il tempo in cui la corteccia ispessisce strato su strato, in cui le radici si intrecciano con altre radici, in cui la resistenza si accumula senza fretta.
