scent of wild fennel

finocchietto selvatico

[Versione italiana – Profumo di finocchietto selvatico]

The wild fennel is an aromatic plant that shines its flowers in late summer; it can grow up to two metres in height and also grows wild in uncultivated places.

Known since time immemorial for its digestive and aperitif properties, there is evidence of its use even in Carolingian capitulars, which prescribed its cultivation as obligatory.

Its flowers and fruits (seeds) are used as a condiment. Following the ancient theory of humours, its yellow colour is reminiscent of the bile circuit (choleric temperament), and the plant has warm and dry qualities. Currently, wild fennel is recognised as having digestive, aperitif, carminative and balsamic properties.

The essential oil should be used with caution because it contains trans-anethole and furanocoumarins (photosensitisers). It has antispasmodic and carminative qualities, but is best used externally (one drop on a little oil or cream) and not by children or pregnant women.

One or two drops diffused in the room can aid breathing and digestion, and give a feeling of beneficial warmth. The pungent, penetrating scent can also stimulate the appetite, and in synergy with other essences can make the environment stimulating and pleasant. In general, its warm and dry characteristics are useful for all people who need stimulation, motivation, a boost when you feel tired even if you are not tired. An excellent autumn essential oil, to be used sparingly and sensibly. Flowers and seeds, collected or bought, are also wellness allies to be used in the kitchen.
